Posh Nails Lemongrass-Ginger Treatment plus a Giveaway!

While there is no way to beat the scorching heat of the sun, there is no stopping us from feeling fresh this summer. Head off to Posh Nails to get rid of the heat stress that tend to weigh you down. Its latest treatment designed to pamper those hands and feet with the benefits of lemongrass and ginger. Ginger and lemongrass are two powerful herbs coupled with many health benefits.

Lemon Grass is a known for its highly-aromatic citrus flavor. Lemon Grass oil (citronella) is widely used in aromatherapy as it is believed to have a calming effect. Aside from its  germicidal qualities, its soothing oils are used to minimize pores and to moisturize dry skin.

The invogorating Ginger on the other hand, contains anti-oxidants that improve elasticity for firmer, younger-looking skin. Combined with lemongrass, Posh Nails' new pampering package is the perfect way to relax at the end of a long day!

We were privileged to try it out at the newly-opened SM Mall of Asia branch. Pampering starts with a foot soak in warm water. The attending staff applied the paraben-free Lemongrass Ginger Sugar Scrub and moves on to exfoliate rough skin and remove calluses. After the gentle foot scrub, She rinses my feet and legs, dries them with a cotton towel and applies the super-hydrating Lemongrass Ginger Moisture Mask, which is rich in anti-oxidants and skin regenerating ingredients to soften, rejuvenate, and brighten skin to a glowing and youthful appearance while repairing skin damage. It smelled so good!

Next, she trims, shapes and buffs my nails. She applies a base coat, my chosen China Glaze 1202 polish plus a top coat to complete the pedicure. I had the same invigorating treatment for my manicure.

Their treatments are designed to stimulate the senses through gentle care that leaves with intense hydration that lasts for hours.

A Tropical Paradise: Dewi Sri Farm

I joined fellow mombloggers with kids in tow last April 8 in visiting Dewi Sri. It is a farm, with conveniences that you will find in a resort: playground, pavilions, well-maintained gardens and swimming pools.

Walking pass through its main gate leads to Balinese-adorned gate leading to the swimming pool area. A pavillion on the left side serves as a receiving area/al fresco dining hall, where they serve Indonesian cuisine.

Their modern tropical villas had thatched roofings and the use of natural materials like wood and stones are evident in their Balinese-style houses.  Each has lots of open space and opens to a spacious courtyard with many gardens. Some landscaped balinese gardens are laid out with ponds.

They offer accommodation and event packages at the farm resort. Villa accommodation package at the Cottage costs 1350 pesos per head (minimum of 10 pax) and it includes a welcome drink, dinner and breakfast.  Dewi Sri Farm  can customize  meals to include Indonesian cuisine.

Their farm animals include  rabbits, turkeys goats, chickens, ducks, swans, peacocks, fishes and more.

Kids had a chance to pet and feed these animals.

Dewi Sri Farm also has its own rice plantation plus  hydrophonic farming facilities on top of the orchard.  Their homegrown vegetation  include imported herbs and spices  from Indonesia, which they incorporate in the food they serve at the farm.

We all had a grand time savoring produce at the farm. Kids even got at hand at picking the freshest spinach! It was a great experience meeting the people who grow our food and  to learn how to plant them from the farmers themselves.

The farm sells fruits and vegetables which are the freshest ever. Fruits are allowed to ripen fully in the field.   Food is as real as it gets—fresh from the farm.

The children had fun at the rafting activity!

We enjoyed communing with  nature  for a day. A quiet day at the farm is relaxing!

Our fun day at Dewi Sri Farm is something my daughter and I would remember for a long time.

British School Manila introduces flying trapeze as an after school activity

A  group of girls from British School Manila’s Year 5 and 6 have been taking part in an After School Activity in Bonifacio for the past 11 weeks. Flying Trapeze Philippines (FTP) is the first and only full-size Flying Trapeze rig in the Philippines and one of only a few in all of Asia.

Located in the heart of Bonifacio Global City, Taguig, FTP is an excellent alternative form of exercise which tones your upper body and core muscles within a fun acrobatic and challenging environment.  It is an intense workout for mind, body, and spirit appropriate for all ages and fitness levels.

FTP has given these girls the opportunity to try out a relatively new sport  activity filled with high-flying fun. Aside from being lots of fun, it is also very physically demanding. High-flying routines like these provide a full body workout.

These girls learn to hook their legs over the bar, a position called the knee hang in their first lesson,  which prepare them to perform a catch. Participants swing, hang, and even attempt catches just like real acrobatic flyers.

‘With help from our fantastic local Filipino coaches, we have all been able to develop so many different skills whilst being 30 feet in the air – scary,’ said oTrapezthe performers. Trapeze relies heavily on understanding the timings of your swing so that you are able to be caught in mid-air at the right opportunity. After only a few training sessions, they were being caught by another Trapeze artist whilst flying through the air!

Last Friday, the BSM team got together with children from International School Manila (ISM) for the first Philippines Inter-School Trapeze Show. It was an incredible opportunity to show off all of their new skills to an audience – who of course were wowed! Although they admitted to feeling under pressure, the students were outstanding and performed with great enthusiasm.

“As I walked up the 25 steps of the ladder for the first time, I could feel my legs begin to shake. Fear took over. I approached the top of the platform and pulled myself up. I grabbed hold of the bar. In the background, I could hear the words, “ready, 3, 2, 1” and something within me forced me to jump off. For the first time in my life, I actually felt like I was flying through the air, weightless and free. This was the day I fell in love with the sport of Trapezing.” (Izzy Moon)

BSM children’s performance was followed by an awe-inspiring demonstration from the FTP instructors showing everybody the unbelievable skills they could develop with practice and dedication.

FTP’s mantra which is used when encouraging the children at this early age, is one which truly helps to inspire: “Those who don’t jump will never fly.” Very close to one of BSM mantras, “if it doesn’t challenge you it doesn’t change you”.

BSM hopes to motivate each child to aim higher and floating through the air on a flying trapeze certainly made this happen.

Top PhilamLife Leaders join in the AIA Premier Leader’s Summit 2016 in Bangkok

“A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way,” said leadership expert John C. Maxwell. This is how true leadership is passed on in institutions that have been in operation for decades. In the case of financial advisors, nothing portrays a sense of leadership more than the Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT).

MDRT membership is now recognized internationally as the standard of excellence in the life insurance and financial services business and AIA Group made it a central theme in their recently concluded Premier Leader’s Summit. The annual event held in Bangkok, Thailand was entitled “Sustaining Success: Building an MDRT Culture,” and gathered the best agency leaders of AIA from all over Asia.

43 members from AIA’s local group, Philam Life, were among the delegates. PhilamLife’s top qualifiers per category were Lourdes M. Del Mundo (Top District, Del Mundo Associates), Ismael L. Melendres, Jr. and Cecilia A. Melendres (Top Tenured Agency, Melendres Associates), Anna Concepcion C. Blanco (Top Rookie Agency, Starbright Financial Advisors), Carlos C. Veneracion (Top Tenured Unit, Veneracion Financials), and Mark Christoper C. Yu (Top Rookie Unit, Yu Associates).

These Philam Life managers were able to become self-made millionaires through their hard work and perseverance in building a successful team of expert financial advisors.

Each one of them have made it their mission to help mentor own advisors to achieve the highest distinction that a Financial Advisor can aspire for---–to qualify to the MDRT. Being invited to the annual Premier Leader’s Summit is an honour and a privilege for any sales leader. These outstanding Filipinos were recognized for their remarkable leadership and agency-building abilities and for transforming the lives of the men and women they have recruited, trained and developed.

Being officially recognized as a MDRT practitioner is proof that a leader has been successful in building a business in the insurance industry and PhilamLife is indeed leading a role model for other aspiring agency leaders and entrepreneurs to emulate.

Philam Vitality comes with Unprecedented Living Benefits

For the first time in the Philippines, insurance products offer living benefits “like never before” with a science-backed and global wellness programme, Vitality. With close to 20 years of success spanning South Africa, United States, Europe, China, Hong Kong and Australia, Vitality is made available for Filipinos who would like to go beyond traditional life insurance products.

BPI-Philam introduced Assure Protect to the market recently, following Philam Life’s launch on October 2015. Assure Protect is a high-value life insurance plan which allows policyholders to enjoy high market returns. It is a unit-linked protection plan that comes with Philam Vitality and offers an upfront 10% discount on the insurance premium while keeping the life insurance benefits and coverage the same. The discount can increase up to 20% depending on engagement & health status. This is happening for the first time in the Philippines.

Beyond protection, investment and savings, Philam Vitality pushes the bar and gives day-to-day living benefits that will reward members for being healthy.

“With Philam Vitality, insurance becomes strongly relevant to our policy holders every day. It is there when they make daily choices: what to eat, how they can improve their health, what exercise to do today, what vacations to plan for, etc.” says Philam Life chief executive officer, Mr. Axel Bromley.

“We want to empower Filipinos to achieve financial security and prosperity. This can only truly happen if health does not get in the way.” says BPI-Philam chief executive officer and president, Mr. Ariel Cantos.

Philam Vitality gives easier access to basic health check so members will watch out for their health status, like their updated cholesterol and sugar levels. The programme has partnered with industry leaders Makati Medical Center and Hi-Precision Diagnostics for discounts to basic and some advanced screens. Its exclusive dental partner, Gan Advanced Osseointegration Center (GAOC), likewise provides significant discounts for basic dental assessments.

To keep improving their health, members are given discounts to Gold’s Gym, Toby’s Sports and renowned fitness device brands, Garmin and Polar. Smokers can also take advantage of a special package for Smoking Cessation at the Makati Medical Center.

Each time a member takes the screens and does healthy activities, Philam Vitality points will be awarded. The points add up to allow a member to qualify for a higher status for higher benefits, starting from Bronze to Silver, Gold and Platinum. Intelligent incentives were designed to reward members for taking steps to be healthier. These rewards come from partners like SM Cinema, Seda Hotels, Marriott and Enchanted Kingdom.

“The rewards one can get from the Philam Vitality programme are astounding. From the insurance premium discount to all the partner benefits, a member can see that insurance is now more and more relevant to him.

We’re excited to launch Philam Vitality to our BPI-Philam customers and we hope it will really encourage our members to live healthier and happier lives,” says Mr. Cantos.

Schneider Electric Philippines launches "Bahay Safety, Buhay Safety" Campaign

Schneider Electric Philippines launched the Bahay Safety, Buhay Safety Campaign, an advocacy to raise awareness about electrical safety at home in a media launch held in Makati.   As the global specialist in energy management and automation, Schneider Electric, along with safety advocates TxtFire Philippines Inc., showed how fires, and personal injury, can be prevented simply by following simple safety precautions and investing in the right electrical fittings.

The best way to practice fire safety is to make sure a fire doesn't break out in the first place. “It takes very little electricity to cause harm,” said Mr. Jones Lim, Public Safety Director of TxtFire, who was the resource person on safety for the event. “But as with anything, as long as we know how to handle it, electricity can help power our lives with minimal risk.”

TxtFire is a group of volunteers, who initially offered immediate response to reported fires within their areas of jurisdiction. But now they are more proactive in their approach by going to different provinces to educate people how they can prevent fires.

Mr. Lim opened up with a primer on common electrical facts, its effects on the human body, the most common ways that we’re exposed to electrical damage or injury, and how to manage them. Most common of which is faulty electrical wiring, which can be prevented simply by ensuring that your homes wires, switches, plugs, and appliances, are well insulated and properly grounded.

After the primer from Mr. Lim. Schneider Electric’s own Erwin Creencia, Retail Sales Director, showed global statistics on electricity-related injuries and fatalities at home. According to the French Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development, Transport and housing, 4,000 people get serious electric shocks every year in France where 100 of those incidents are fatal. More data from an independent study from GRESEL, a French voluntary research group, revealed that 40% of the incidents happen to children under 9. In the US, a 2012 study from the University of Oklahoma stated that electrocutions are the 4th most common causes of industry fatalities. Over 3,600 suffer from disabling injuries and 600 people die every year from electrocution.

“Even in developed countries in Europe, a lot of homes are potentially electrically unsafe,” Creencia said. “But we can prevent the worst from happening. We just need to know more about how we can better protect our home and of course our family,” he added.

Creencia further defined what “Safety at Home” really meant. For Schneider’s Bahay Safety, Buhay Safety campaign, Creencia focused on three key elements:

1) Safety for property, which starts with protection against overloads;
2) Safety for your family, which aims to protect your loved ones against electrocution and other electrical dangers; and
3) Safety for electrical appliances, which protects your expensive devices from malfunctions due to overvoltage.

Schneider Electric has always believed that starting with the correct equipment is a crucial investment to your home and your family. For each of the three safety elements, Schneider Electric presents a solution for Bahay Safety, Buhay Safety. First, the Residual Current Devices (RCD), which automatically turns off the current when it senses a short or electric shock, preventing further injury. They also presented miniature circuit breakers, which protects against short circuits and overloads from appliances, thus preventing fires. And lastly, surge protection devices, which protect from overvoltage cause by inconsistent power currents and lightning strikes, to save your expensive appliances from damage.

Schneider Electric’s solutions are perfect to help you protect your family and your home from a fire. They are compliant with the International Electrotechnical Commission or IEC standards. Electrical installations in buildings that have the IEC 60364 standard include safety protection standards against electric shock, thermal effects, overcurrent, voltage disturbances and electromagnetic disturbances.

“By following a few simple safety protocols such as making sure your electrical wiring are not faulty and damaged, investing in the right equipment and ensuring their proper installation, the risks of electrical fire, damage, injury can be greatly reduced,” Creencia added. “With so much at stake—valuable property and even more so the lives of family members—no cost is too great when it comes to safety,” he concluded.

Learn the basics of polymer clay art at The Crafters Marketplace

Last April 2, my daughter and I joined in the Basic POLYMER CLAY ART Workshop by The Crafters Marketplace. We attended the class  along with 7 fellow mombloggers and their kids.

The Crafters Marketplace store showcases a wide variety of handmade items. Most of the stylish jewelry pieces and dainty accessories were made with polymer clay.

Melody, our instructor, told us crafting intricate designs in various shapes and forms imaginable is possible with polymer clay art.  She used to make accessories from beads and she had switched then to polymer clay art beads and jewelry creations to take her craft one notch higher.

Most of the jewelry pieces on display were made by her and her mom.  There were Clay Bangles,   Clay Bead Necklace,  Clay Bracelets, Clay Pendants/Lockets,   DIY Clay Earrings and decorative frames with intricate polymer clay flower designs.  Polymer clay art equates to infinite projects and infinite material combinations!  Best of all, they can all be made using your hands, with your oven, and everyday kitchen or craft items.

For someone just beginning to work with Polymer Clay, kneading to make it elastic was hard.  Each brand has different consistency. Some are much harder to work with. It takes a lot longer to knead the clay. Others are soft and sticky. The softer it is, the easier it is to knead. Some polymer brands makes it easier to get it into the shape you want. SCULPEY is much softer and faster to work with. A useful starter tool set includes a ceramic floor tile (or smooth acrylic board that the clay won’t stick to), an acryllic roller, a clay cutter and cookie cutters.

We were taught how to make flowers  to start out.    This is the part that   I thought it was easy to do. All we had to do was make a shape of petals, arrange the petal on a flat disc to form a flower. We used a translucent liquid polymer as an adhesive. The same maybe used to soften hard polymer clay and to add colour to clay we were told.

Our next craft project was a keychain. We started kneading another batch of clay and rolled it out into a flat piece. I made mine thin, and used round and heart-shaped cookie cutters make an impression. I made some clay conversation hearts by stamping letters on the cut outs.

IMy daughter played around with letter stamps and some clay to get a good impression, without pushing too hard and getting a second circle impression around the letters. In so doing, she was able to test out how the stamp ink looks on the clay surface.

After attaching the keychain eyelet on each one, we put it on a cookie sheet, and popped it in the oven at the temperature level required (times and temperatures vary with each brand). There is a need to it cool down before doing anything else with it, because it is fragile while hot.

Miss Melody told us that polymer clay art projects can be painted with simple acrylic paint or glaze after the clay has cooled off.  There is really so much to learn about polymer clay!

The Crafters Marketplace is holding Summer Art Workshops for those interested in honing a new skill or hobby. They have been doing business since November 2015 and some of their materials are directly sourced from US and Canada.

Do check them out soon to get you started in a handcrafting adventure this summer.
