Let us Support People Empowerment for Arthritis and Lupus (PEARL)

Though Rheumatic Diseases are the leading cause of loss of productivity and morbidity among those in the working age group (ages 20-35), the national health programs do not include rheumatic conditions among the priority list of diseases. Sad to say, general lack of public awareness equates to inadequate healthcare delivery to those afflicted with rheumatic diseases.

This compromises the early detection and treatment of the more serious conditions such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis, connective tissue diseases and spondylo arthropathies like psoriatic arthritis.

Lupus is an auto-immune disease that has no definite pattern of manifestation. In lupus, the immune system attacks tissues in various parts of the body. This abnormal activity leads to tissue damage and symptoms differ greatly per person.

People with lupus often also develop specific problems when the immune system attacks an organ or body area. The joints, skin, blood and and kidneys are those usually affected by lupus. Patients with severe lupus need proper medication to control their flare-ups and live productive lives.
People Empowerment for Arthritis and Lupus (PEARL) media forum was held earlier today in Makati City to raise public awareness. Among the participants were lupus and inflammatory arthritis patients, rheumatology fellows together with PSORPHIL, LUISA and PEARL advocates.

Why is Psoriasis Philippines (PSORPHIL) working closely with PEARL? It is because between 20% to 40% of people with psoriasis suffers from the debilitating Psoriatic Arthritis.

PEARL is an advocacy led and composed by the concerted efforts of impassioned healthcare professionals, patients and caregivers that is envisioned to be a long standing movement for the betterment of the plight among individual with chronic rheumatic conditions locally with a global perspective. Specific programs have been laid out and initiated namely the Arthritis and lupus Clinics with specialty medical consultations, lectures, and support group activities.

Lupus Inspired Advocacy (LUISA) has been at the forefront of championing the causes of persons afflicted with Lupus or SLE in the Philippines. It promotes and protects the interest of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus in the country. LUISA founders by Dr. Sandra V. Navarra and Ma. Luisa Cojuangco-Cruz, had taken the organization to greater heights since then. Highlights of which is successfully earmarking February as Lupus Advocacy month via a presidential proclamation.
LUISA has partnered Psoriatic Philippines (PSORPHIL) Chairperson Mr. Josef de Guzman to celebrate the unique artistry of patients with lupus and arthritis this coming March 15, 2014 via PEARL's  "The Patient, The Artist Musicale".

Mark your calendars and head off to the PEARL! Musicale and Art Exhibit at Glorietta.  Get to meet people who live with these diseases and learn more how the disease affects them.

No Hope Lost: A Pneumoccocal & Rotavirus Disease Awareness Campaign

Pneumonia and Diarrhea are the top two leading causes of mortality and morbidity among Filipino children less than 5 years of age. National statistics show an estimated 37 Filipino children die of pneumonia every day while 13 Filipino children die of diarrhea on a daily basis.

Losing a child is the most heartbreaking experience for a mother to go through. But no child has to die because of pneumonia or rotavirus diseases, especially since these are both highly preventable through vaccination. Early protection is the key to reduce disease burden.

No Hope Lost advocacy is all about raising awareness among parents that Pneumoccocal & Rotavirus Diseases can potentially lead to devastating consequences if left unchecked. While the DOH is campaigning about ridding society of these diseases, parents also play a crucial role in educating themselves about these diseases and the vaccines that can help them prevent the deadly viruses from wrecking havoc on the lives of their children and thus a campaign called “No Hope Lost” has been launched.

PNEUMONIA

Pneumonia is the single greatest cause of death in children worldwide.

Pneumonia is an inflammatory condition of the lung which affects primarily the microscopic air sacs known as alveoli. The typical symptoms of pneumonia include a cough, chest pain, fever, and difficulty breathing.

Pneumococcal disease is an infection caused by the bacterium S. pneumoniae also known as pneumococcus which can result to life-threatening conditions such as pneumonia. It can also result to Acute Otitis Media (AOM) which is an ear infection, a common and highly prevalent disease. It also includes severe diseases such as meningitis, complicated pneumonia, and sepsis (blood poisoning), which occur when the pneumococcus "invades" the blood. The invasive forms of the pneumococcal disease are a category called Invasive Pneumococcal Disease (IPD).

DIARRHEA

Globally, diarrhea is the second leading killer of children under 5 years of age, accounting for 1.4 million child deaths annually. Rotavirus Gastroenteritis (RVGE) is the common cause of diarrhea and severe dehydration in young children. It is also the leading reason of diarrheal hospitalizations and deaths among children. It is most severe and frequent in infants aged 3-24 months.

Rotavirus infects virtually every child within the first 5 years of life, irrespective of race or socio-economic status. That is why it is called a “democratic virus.” In the Philippines, diarrhea is the second leading cause of child mortality accounting for almost 5,000 deaths yearly, translating to more than 13 Filipino children dying due to diarrhea every day.

Prevention is KEY

Among the ways to get your child protected aside from breastfeeding, hand washing, preventing air pollution, and adequate nutrition, is through vaccination.

“It’s the best time to raise awareness on pneumonia and diarrhea prevention. These diseases should not cause unnecessary suffering to young children,” says Dr. Sally Gatchalian, Philippine Foundation for Vaccination Director. “Sometimes it’s just that parents don’t know enough about these diseases, and they don’t know that there are actually vaccines for them.”

THE GOVERNMENT’S ROLE IN FIGHTING THESE KILLER DISEASES

In 2012, the Philippine government has already acknowledged this burden and addressed it by introducing Rotavirus Vaccine (RV) in the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) where 700,000 Filipino children aged 6 weeks up to 6 months of age were given free rotavirus vaccines.

In 2013, the Department of Health (DOH) leveled up the fight against the top killer of Filipino children by including another novel vaccine called Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV) in the EPI.

This combined effort to protect Filipino children against pneumonia and diarrhea contributes to the achievement of Millennium Development Goal (MDG) 4 of reducing infant and child mortality by 2/3 by 2015. RV and PCV are novel vaccines introduced by the DOH in the last 5 years and the Philippines is the first country in the ASEAN region to introduce both vaccines in the EPI.

GSK’S SUPPORT IN THIS CRUSADE

As one of the world’s leading research-based pharmaceutical and healthcare companies, GSK continues to be a committed partner of both private healthcare practitioners and the government in the fight against childhood diseases, death and suffering around the world by offering health solutions for the reduction of overall diseases.

The “No Hope Lost” campaign from GlaxoSmithKline, which embodies the need for immediate action to get children vaccinated against pneumonia and diarrhea, will soon be launched through radio ads, print notices, flyers, and posters. “With the help of our dear pediatricians, and the Department of Health, we are committed to the reduction of pneumonia and diarrhea cases nationwide by supplying high quality vaccines. These diseases account for an alarming almost 50 mortalities per day in the Philippines. GSK is here to support the Filipino medical community and the government’s drive to make health services accessible to everyone,” added Philip Cruz, GSK Medical Director.

Ask your pediatrician about preventive measures against pneumococcal and rotavirus diseases.

This community development event aims to arm women with the different tools, information and skills to help them achieve having it all, the Chicdriven way.

Partners including Standard Insurance, Marie France, Brabantia, Garden barn and Tuason Racing School will offer exciting booth demos and workshops during the expo.

“We wanted to make an event that will bring together different women’s group and advocacies in one celebration. We want the community to be engaged as active participants and not just passive spectators," explains Jeanette Ipapo-Tuason, author of the Chicdriven and organizer of the expo. “Each seminar represents an advocacy and is co-hosted by a civic or advocacy group such as Zonta Club Alabang, Mommy Mundo, and parent’s associations of the different schools in the south,” she added.
In this time and age, women can have it all. They can be mothers, career women, married or single, passionate advocates and decision-makers. Women have become a force to reckon with in predominantly masculine industries including Motoring. Hence the Chicdriven Column was born. It's motoring in women-speak. Cars are not tested on how many cylinders it has but how many strollers it can fit or if its ride is good enough to apply liquid eyeliner while sitting in the passenger seat.

Cars have become one of the tools that help Chicdriver¹s achieve “having it all.” Though always trying to strive for the best, this endeavor is not without broken nails or messed up hair. In fact, to be Chicdriven means honoring the struggles and efforts each and every woman goes through to become what she chooses to be -- helping herself to the tools that make it look effortless.
