The Story of BEKO

BEKO's history goes all the way back in 1954, the time when the industrialization had just started to develop in Turkey. BEKO stands for the first two letters of Bejerano and Koç.

Vehbi Koç the founder of the Koç Holding, was in search of a product that would provide foreign currency to Turkey. He partnered with a factory named Bejerano to make an investment in a sauce and canning factory by making use of Bejerano's experience in this sector. The company however, could not begin operating because of the situation in Turkey.

The name of the canning factory was changed to BEKO Ticaret A.S. and with this enterprise, Vehbi Koç initiated the first dealership system of consumer durables in Turkey and started to deliver Arçelik products to customers’ houses.

In 1977, BEKO Ticaret assigned the distribution rights of Arçelik to Atilim. Since 1983, BEKO has been operating in Turkey's white goods sector with its deep knowledge and experience.

In the 1990s, BEKO was designated as an export brand through the overseas activities of Koç Group.

By the year 2000, as a result of the restructuring process of the Koç Holding Durable Goods Group, BEKO dissociated from BEKO Ticaret A.S. and started to operate under the umbrella of Arçelik A.S by uniting with the Arçelik brand.Being the first Turkish white good brand offered for sale in abroad markets, BEKO has always embraced the goal of being a global brand.

BEKO has been the first choice of 280 million consumers in more than 100 countries by carrying on its Turkish market success in abroad. Today, BEKO branded products are sold every two seconds in the World.

BEKO entered the Philippine market in July of 2015 and exclusively available in select SM Appliance Center Stores, BEKO provides an innovative and reliable range of kitchen and home appliances which make consumers daily lives easier.Designed to make your life easier thanks to super-fast programmes and energy saving technology

Leni Robredo Recalls People Power-Inspired Love Story with the late Jesse Robredo

Photo from Leni Robredo's twitter account
Liberal Party's only female running for the second highest post in the country, Leni Robredo can’t help but remember her love story with the late Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo every time the country commemorates EDSA People Power I.

After all, Leni and Jesse crossed paths days after the Bloodless Revolution inspired both of them to return to Naga City and start a career in public service.

“Ang love story namin ni Jesse ay produkto ng People Power. Bumalik kami ng Naga ni Jesse para manilbihan,” Robredo said. Jesse returned to Naga City in 1986 to assume the position of Program Director of the Bicol River Basin Development Program (BRBDP), where she met Leni.

Back then, Robredo was a fresh economics graduate from the University of the Philippines and was applying for her first job at BRBDP. She wanted a job there after hearing of great, new things happening at the agency under the helm of its new dynamic director. It was also Jesse who interviewed and hired her.

“Kaga-graduate ko pa lang sa UP ng Economics, umuwi po ako sa amin para magtrabaho. Iyong pinakauna ko pong boss ay ang aking asawa. Doon po kami nagkakilala,” Robredo said. One year after their meeting, Jesse and Leni got married.

In 1988, Jesse won as mayor of Naga City while Leni pursued her dream of becoming a lawyer, completing her law degree at University of Nueva Caceres (UNC). She passed the bar examination in 1997. Leni Gerona Robredo, stayed hidden for most of Mayor Jesse's public life. It was only during the late mayor's death did she appear, to radiate grace even in mourning clothes.

After passing the bar examination in 1997, Robredo worked as lawyer for the Public Attorney’s Office and later as a free legal aid lawyer for Sentro ng Alternatibong Lingap Pang Legal (SALIGAN), a non-government organization dedicated to empowering members of marginalized sectors.

For almost a decade, Robredo was a practicing lawyer who focused on cases involving the marginalized sector. Leni spent her time pro-bono legal work for farmers, fishermen, abused women, urban poor and indigenous peoples. She is connected with the Naga chapter of Sentro ng Alternatibong Lingap Pang Legal (Saligan), a national alternative lawyers’ group helping farmers.

She founded Lakas ng Kababaihan ng Naga. She held the position of president of the Naga City Council for Women in the past, and was a member of Federacion International de Abogados.

She was later elected Congressman of the 3rd District of Camarines Sur in the May 2013 elections. She continued her husband's legacy of governance in Naga since then.

Leni Robredo, along with her late husband, remains as Negueño's champion which the locals will always be proud to call their own.

Chinese New Year celebration at Chinatown LaiLai Hotel

Last February 7, 2016, I was part of media invited for a hotel familiarization tour and Chinese New Year celebration at the Chinatown Lai Lai Hotel.

Well-positioned at the heart of Binondo, Manila's nostalgic hub, the Chinatown LaiLai Hotel lies in close proximity to prominent churches, vibrant shopping malls, and other historical landmarks.

Binondo is regarded as the oldest Chinatown in the world.  Known as a commercial district at the heart of Manila, it still stands as  as an indelible symbol of Chinese influence in the country since it was established in 1594 by the Spanish colonizers.

Binondo's colorful past also includes  serving as home to famous Filipino-Chinese figures, like philanthropist Roman Ongpin, who supported the Philippine Revolution, and San Lorenzo Ruiz, the first Filipino saint.
Binondo Church (Minor Basilica of Saint Lorenzo Ruiz and Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Parish) was founded by Dominican priests in 1596

Binondo today stands as a bustling Chinese community replete with malls, business centers, restaurants, apothecaries, food stalls, local feng shui shops, Chinese medicinal shops etc.

“Lai Lai” meaning “come”, the hotel is inviting people go visit the significant part of the country's history. Chinatown Lai Lai Hotel is surrounded by  Filipino and Chinese heritage that has perfectly blended through historical landmarks in Binondo.

It  is still in its original structure &nbsposince it was established in 1988

Chinatown Lai Lai Hotel prepared an array of traditional Chinese activities to celebrate the year of the Fire Monkey. The festivities kicked off with a Lion Dance and Taoist Blessing to bring good luck to the whole Filipino and Chinese community.

There was also the traditional Dragon dance which was the highlight of the festivities.

The Dragon is a very important aspect of the Chinese culture as it represents wisdom, power, wealth and is believed to drive away bad luck. The globe is usually a red or yellow globe as it represents the spring rains and the sun for a good harvest.  A Dragon chasing the "pearl of wisdom" represents the Dragon's way to pursue insight and knowledge.

The Chinatown Lai Lai Hotel re-launched its facilities to  feature Feng Shui interiors, rooms and new amenities.   It reopened its doors on September 1, 2014 under the new management of Jackson Chua and  changed the name from Binondo Suites Manila to “Chinatown Lai Lai Hotel".  Since then it developed into a modern Chinese-style hotel from the facade, lobby, rooms down to the hotel decors.

The newly-renovated rooms  were designed based on Feng Shui that illuminates harmony and happiness that in turn made guests feel relaxed all throughout their hotel stay.

“Management wants every guests to feel the excitement of staying at the hotel. Equipped with our strong knowledge in feng shui, our guest will be amazed to occupy a room based on his luck,” says Jackson Chua, Chinatown Lai Lai Hotel General Manager.

Guests will truly appreciate the 84 Chinese-style rooms.  They can choose among Standard rooms (one queen size bed), Superior Rooms (two single beds), Deluxe rooms (one queen size bed and one single bed) Junior Suites and Executive Suites (ideal for families).
