Exquisitely Filipino at Aracama

After a long, tiring day, I agreed to do a foodie meetup at Aracama courtesy of Zomato. I'm addicted to these leisurely pursuits lately and have been looking forward to new food discoveries.

Sisig Fries

Who will not love the surprise in these fries? It is a filling carbo loading and a wonderful comfort food at its best. I love how Aracama combines French Fries with the popular Sisig dish. My all time fastfood favorite is made more appetizing with a generous portion of pre-made Sisig on top.

You'll love the perfectly-made Crispy Pata like I did. It has a tender meat under its crunchy skin.

It's good that they served us a vegetable salad to cut through this sinful indulgence.

Their Chop-chop Salad is a good way to enjoy vegetables. The crisp greens comes in mixed with fried wonton, which adds more texture to it. I love the color mix and texture in this refreshing dish prepared directly on the chopping board.

Hipon and Bitsuelas (Shrimp and Baguio Green Beans) came in next. My mom ussed to prepare this at home. The blend of flavors was alright.

We were also served Crispy Fried Chicken, Spicy Mushrooms, and Kalkag.

And just when I thought I couldn't take another bite, Sinigang na Baka was served. So I decided that there's always room left for this yummy, tender beef stew.

For dessert, we had Dulce and Bunuelos plus ChocNut Ice Cream I was greeted by a wonderful smell of Dulce & Bunuelos. The aroma of freshly-baked buns was enticing that I couldn't resist indulging my sweet tooth with these fun treats. I immediately halved the shortbread and spread its yummy "yema" filling. Every bite was heavenly! This perfect dessert goes well with a cup of brewed coffee.

Aracama takes the familiar ChocNut Pinoy candy to the next level by concocting its ChocNut Ice Cream. The addition of ChocNut to the creamy vanilla ice ceam gives it a sweet, nutty flavor and the added nutty texture.

Two hours later and fully-satiated, I was ready to call it a night.

Don't miss out on Crispy Pata and Sisig Fries when you dine in at Aracama. Their Dulce & Bunuelos plus ChocNut Ice Cream make awesome sweet treats.

Get tested for Vitamin D Deficiency using Test4D

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin present in a few animal-based foods. The human body produces vitamin D endogenously when the sun's ultraviolet rays strike the skin to trigger Vitamin D synthesis. Largely known as the bone vitamin, Vitamin D studies reveal that it plays a major role in the life cycle of human cells. It is one of the many nutrients that our bodies need for normal growth and development as every cell type has receptors for vitamin D.

These receptors in turn define Vitamin D as a hormone. Hence, doctors recommend reaching 50 ng/ml of vitamin D in the blood to achieve an optimal vitamin D status. A minimum of 30 ng/ml of vitamin D in the blood is needed to ensure a sufficient level which is equivalent to 2000 IU/day.

In a press briefing conducted by Biobalance, Dr. Stan Chua (Functional Medicine and Health Optimization Medicine consultant), tolds us that majority of his patients often tested positive for vitamin D deficiency. I was surprised to know that Vitamin D deficiency is a global epidemic.

Low Levels of Vitamin D spells Deficiency, Disease and and Deadly

Unless your body is at its optimal level, Vitamin D deficiency leads to a host of progressive disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, weak bones, autoimmune, neurological and others. chronic illnesses. Vitamin D deficiency is associated with a long list of diseases that span all systems in the body.

Getting Tested

The only way to test for vitamin D deficiency is through blood testing. Biobalance offers an affordable point-of-care testing kit called Test4D, which determines if one has low levels of vitamin D.

All it takes a a prick in the finger. I had the privilege to try out Test4D at biobalance. After i had my finger pricked, they added a few drops of my blood on the kit and let it settle for up to 10 minutes. Just like a frog test kit, two lines reveals positivity for vitamin D deficiency in 10 minutes. Test4D is priced at P1,100 with its test accuracy gauged at 97%.

I was not surprised to find out that my vitamin D levels are insufficient. I shy away from the sun and often slab on sunscreen extensively at times when I do go out. It explains why I often suffer from bone pain and muscle waekness. I was not aware that these were subtle symptoms of vitamin D deficiency.

Get energized through Sun Exposure

Season, time of the day, sunscreen and skin melanin content affect the UV radiation exposure and vitamin D synthesis. The sun provides free dose of vitamin D that provides unlimited opportunities to form vitamin D.

Some vitamin D researches suggest that individuals take a mere 5-20 minutes sun exposure between 10AM and 3PM to the face, arms, legs or back wihout sunscreen twice a week to get sufficient vitamin D synthesis.

Those with limited sun exposure need to include good sources of vitamin D in their diet or take supplements to achieve recommended levels.

Optimize Vitamin D Levels to become healthier

Medical studies show the importance of maintaining adequate Vitamin D levels in our bodies. While our bodies make some vitamin D, most of us do not have enough to keep the body tissues operating at peak capacity. This being the case, each one requires additional amounts from existing diet, sun or supplement to guarantee adequate levels.

Vitamin D comes in two forms: ergocalciferol (D2) and cholecalciferol (D3) in dietary supplement and vitamin D-fortified foods. Supplementation with vitamin D3 has been shown to be an effective deterrent in the prevalence of diseases. And Biobalance offers a wide variety to optimize your health. Among these are Vitamin D3 5000 IU dietary supplements.

Talk to your healthcare provider now and get yourself tested. We all should make efforts to get sufficient vitamin D levels daily to ensure good health.

World COPD Day celebration at Asian Hospital

Early in the morning, Asian Hospital and Medical Center (AHMC) held a motorcade around Filinvest and Alabang Town Center in Muntinlupa. Afterwards, the AHMC Department of Internal Medicine Pulmonology Section offered free diagnosis of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) using Spirometry. Their goal is to raise public awareness of COPD.

COPD is s debilitating, progressive disease that impacts patients' lives. People suffering from COPD do struggle to breathe well. Often complicated with anxiety and depression, COPD limits a patient's activity. Since COPD symptoms are dangerous, it may cause the patient's gradual inactivity. Its main symptom is shortness of breath or airflow limitation but most people with airflow obstruction do not recognize it. Others experience frequent coughing, sputum production, wheezing and chest tightness. Majority of COPD patients exhibit mixed features of chronic bronchitis and emphysema. so, leaving symptoms undertreated may cause them to worsen over time.

Spirometry Testing for COPD

Spirometry is an easy breathing test that measures how well the lungs are working and displays them in a graph. You will be asked to blow all the air out of your lungs into a mouthpiece that is connected to a machine called Spirometry.

Spirometry calculates the amount of air a person blows out of his lungs (forced vital capacity or FVC) and the forced expiratory volume at one second (FEV1). The doctors can diagnose COPD and estimate how severe it is based on how a patient's FEV1 compared to the standard. The FEV1 percentage predicts how badly the airways are obstructed. By repeating lung function tests, doctors can assess if COPD is getting worse and tailor therapy according to the stage of the disease.

The Spirometry-based screening for COPD helps relieve stress. Diagnosing COPD at earlier stages may improve the lives of COPD patients and help extend their lives. Early detection can help patients to manage their struggle with breathing difficulties. Early detection can give that motivation to quit smoking and go into a pulmonary rehabilition program to relax the airway muscles. With proper diagnosis, affected individuals will receive the right treatments and follow-up monitoring. Therapy and pumonary rehabilitation in early stages reduces exacerbation and helps prolong life.
