Mandarin Palace Seafood and Shabu-shabu Restaurant

The Chinese have created some of the best-tasting dishes we still enjoy today. And Mandarin Palace  tops the restaurants in the Metro South that serves these authentic Chinese cuisines that you absolutely got to try.

Mandarin Palace offers well-prepared food that has texture, aroma and exquisite flavors that suit any discerning palette. We were given a pot of tea as soon as we sat down.

For dimsum, I had Hakaw (Shrimp Dumplings, P 128) and Siomai (open-topped Steamed Shrimp Dumplings, P 88). The Siomai was dense and chewy the way I like it. These two dimsums are definitely good to blow your cash on.

My other two favorites were the Fried Shrimp Rolls with Almonds plus the roasted Peking Duck (P 1,500 served whole, 2-way).

Peking duck is a famous dish from Beijing savored for its perfectly-browned, crispy skin and aromatic meat. It is usually sliced thinly and eaten wrapped in flat bread. For a bit more flair, you can have it minced and eaten wrapped in lettuce with Hoisin Sauce on the side (best lettuce wraps ever).

We were also served King Fish in Mango Sauce, Salt and Pepper Spareribs (P 600, large serving) and Deep fried Seafood Roll (P 500, large serving).

Though these dishes were fried, it was not greasy. Layers of texture and flavor were imminent in the last two. King Fish in Mango Sauce is an intriguing combination of crispy fried fish served with a sauce using ripe mango slivers and greens. The sweet dressing works its way into the crunchy fish meat making it more savory.

Deep fried Seafood Roll is crunchy on the outside. I love the flavor these seafood-stuffed rolls make. It has that sweet tang that bites through it thick golden crust.

The Salt and Pepper Spareribs is uncomplicated strips of tender pork ribs with a hint of spiciness. I love it!

Braised Chicken with Curry Sauce is a good way to introduce curry to kids. This chicken dish has a very subtle hint of curry taste.

Mandarin Palace also takes Chinese cooking in new directions with modern twists. I got to taste a few of which have their own original touches.
Fish Lips with Mixed Soup (P 600 for large serving)

Fried Squid in Salted Egg is crispy battered and fried squid mixed with salted egg. This is something I would highly recommend.

Mandarin Palace takes rare but flavorful ingredients, such as pigeons and frogs to create refreshing meals. We asked for their Fried Frog Legs to get curiosity out of the way. There is not much meat on them but it tasted like chicken.

For dessert, I had Mango Sago. Chunks of ripened mango enrobed in thick mango cream and sago (tapioca) makes a light, refreshing cold dessert.

Mandarin Palace has been around for three years. When your urge to have Chinese food strikes, get it from Mandarin Palace. If you want to taste their claim to fame, you got to order their dimsum and Peking Duck.

RACKS Paseo de Sta Rosa

It's been years since I last dined in Racks. It is a local restaurant well-known for its off the bone ribs and unparalleled barbeque sauces. When I found out that they have recently opened a branch in Sta Rosa (which is closer to home), I just had to go there with my family and indulge in a feast!

RACKS Paseo de Sta Rosa's interior pairs bright colors with natural earth tones and mid-toned wood furniture, giving it a warm, homey feel.

Our degustation started with a salad. The Classic Caesar Salad, family size (P 350) was just perfect with its crisp combination of romaine, croutons and bacon bits drizzled with a rich Caesar dressing.

For pasta, we ordered Garlic Scampi Pasta (P 295) and Carbonara (P 250, single serving). The first one is a garlicky Italian-American seafood dish over an aldente linguini pasta. The flavors were done right and I love that it comes with steamed broccoli pieces tossed in.

My daughter's creamy Carbonara turned out perfect! She liked it so much that she finished her comfort food all too quickly by herself.

RACKS is also known to make the best Fried Chicken of all time and so my daughter didn't pass up on the opportunity to try it. The Southern-style Chicken (P 380 for half order) comes with Flaky ‎Buttermilk Biscuits‬ and Honey on the side.

The chicken portions are big. Each piece comes with a perfectly crunchy seasoned crust that gives it a savory flavor. The chicken coating has that right amount of crispiness we all crave for.

Racks Classic Pork Ribs (P 315) is an absolutely gorgeous slab of tender, meaty pork ribs flame-grilled to perfection! The moist ribs slides off of the bone easily.
Racks Premium Boneless Pork, Quarter(P 370) satisfies the craving for baby back ribs minus the bones! These delectable short ribs are best paired with potato salad or macaroni and cheese.

My husband was craving for rice and so I asked if they serve one though I couldn't find it on the menu. Well, they actually have plain and java rice offerings I learned.

‪‎RACKS also serves delish desserts. The Mississippi Mud Pie‬ is a real chocolate lover’s delight!   The rich, chocolatey cake topped with Vanilla Ice Cream sits on layer of warm, melted chocolate. What an awesome way to cap a heavenly meal!

It is refreshing that Racks added a few changes on the menu. You'll be glad to know that on top of the original and spicy barbeque sauces, RACKS now sells frozen packs of ribs which you can heat and serve at home for dinner or for parties.

Do drop by RACKS Paseo de Sta Rosa soon for refreshing, tender meals. Their courteous staff will be glad to help you with your food choices.

Paume's Pastry House

Barely six months in operation, Paume's Pastry House is making its way in the food industry. Owner, Chef Carol, takes pride is offering traditional cakes and pastries from scratch with the finest, premium ingredients. This restaurant upgrades its menu to include meals for all members of the family to indulge in.

Prior to discovering her passion for the culinary arts, the chef shares that she was passionate about visual arts.

A fun nook in her shop reflects this creative side of hers. Kids would love to immerse themselves in a book or creative playtime at the said kiddie corner while the adults enjoy conversations over good food and coffee.

When asked why she chose "Paume" for her business name, she explained that it is her French father's surname. In French, Paume refers to palm of the hand and since Chef Carol hand-crafts pastries, desserts and confections herself, she decided that Paume aptly describes what her culinary venture is all about.

Paume's Pastry House recreates French cuisine, and some of the popular dishes locally. Here are the reasons why I will definitely go back with my family:

Garden Salad with Grilled Chicken Pesto and Honey Mustard Dressing (P 180)
This is one of the best-tasting salads I've had. It was really good and a perfect way to start off a meal!

Roast Beef Sandwich(P 180)
Croque Madame (P 180)
I love the French ham and cheese sandwich. The Bechamel and the egg atop the croque makes it really impressive brunch. Croque Madame is great for kids, too.

Pesto with Grilled Chicken (P 230)
Classic Carbonara (P 180)

Lasagna Forno (P 180) with French Kiss Latte (P 150)

For a quick coffee fix, you may choose from Paume's Flavored Latte, Hand Brew, Classic and Signature Coffee Drinks. Their bestseller is the French Kiss Latte.

For kids, I recommend the Iced Milo Dinosaur (P 100) and the Mixed Berries Smoothie (P 150). My daughter loves these two drinks. I got to try the Mixed Berries out of curiosity (it comes in deep royal blue color which I find odd) and it really tasted awesome.

Clockwise:  Snickers Cake, Hazelnut Nougat Cake, Brownies and Blueberry Cheesecake

Paume's Pastry House has a wide variety of confections which all looks great. Each cake portion was moist and good! My top two favorites were the Blueberry Cheesecake and the Hazelnut Nougat Cake. I will have to go and try their sugar-free Oatmeal Cookies next time.

Pre-order your cakes and pastries from Paume's Pastry House. Chef Carol ensures that each one is carefully prepared to make it a perfectly fit for your special occasion.
