Licealiz spearheads Kilusang Kontra Kuto for Head Lice Awareness Month

As a parent, I'm always on top of the latest trends and news on how to raise a healthy child or tween. But I was caught off guard when my preschool child exhibited symptoms of lice infestation!   She frequently scratches her head and was irritable at bedtime due to unbearable itching. My daughter has become very sensitive to lice bites! Upon close examination, I saw nits on her hair strands. No one in our household has head lice and so I was pretty sure that she got it from one of her classmates.

It seems like Head Lice are a common problem that affect anyone at any age regardless of personal habits. The "kuto" infestations are most common in school-age children. Even Love Añover (a celebrity mom), related her dismay on finding out that her child got infected with head lice by their house helper.

“We were very careful with my daughter’s hygiene and surroundings, so I couldn’t believe it when she started scratching her head. Sure enough, we found head lice! We didn’t think it was possible for my daughter to get head lice given how young she was at the time, but eventually we found out that she got them from our household help. When I was a child, we only used suyod, which was quite inefficient in getting all the lice out. For my daughter, we wanted to try something clinically tested and proven in removing lice. We tried Licealiz head lice treatment shampoo and after two weeks of use, my child was lice-free!” she shared.

It is a good thing that there's an over-the-counter head lice treatment shampoo (Pyrethrin) Licealiz,  formulated by Lamoiyan Corporation. This shampoo is applied to the scalp, left on for 10 minutes and then rinsed off. Often, a second insecticide treatment is recommended after the first application as the life cycle is about seven days from the laying of the eggs to the hatching.

Kilusang Kontra Kuto for Head Lice Awareness Month

With September being Head Lice Prevention Month, Lamoiyan Corporation partnered with the Mother and Child Nurses Association of the Philippines (MCNAP) and  UP Manila College of Public Health, in launching #KilusangKontraKuto campaign that aims to spread awareness about lice infestation prevention and treatment.  The  #KilusangKontraKuto (KKK) health education movement seeks to help local communities  address the problem of  head lice.

.

“A study by the DepEd in 2009 estimated that 8 million public school students aged 7 to 12 years old* were infested with head lice,” according to Dr. Arlene Bertuso, an entomologist and professor from the UP Manila College of Public Health.

Dr. Bertuso  recommends that parents regularly inspect their children’s hair, as well as the hair of everyone in the household as  the head lice can live for up to 30 days in a human head and that female lice can lay up to 100 eggs in their lifetime.

Once lice have been found, it is necessary that you clean and disinfect hairbrushes, combs, bedding and fabrics that could be contaminated to prevent it from spreading. MCNAP President Balbina Borneo advised, “We have to take action in keeping our households kuto free through simple activities like avoiding sharing of combs, towels and other materials that touch the hair, as lice spreads through physical contact with infested objects. We should regularly replace our beddings and pillowcases to avoid the transfer of lice.”

While a continuous cycle produces more and more lice, itchiness could be the least of a child's worries. Many lice-infected children have experienced being ridiculed and this can result in a lot of emotional distress because many people still mistakenly believe that lice infestations are a sign of poor hygiene.  Worse, the teasing often leads  them to miss school for days at a time.

“Nurses all over the Philippines, especially those assigned in schools, commonly encounter children with kuto,” shared Balbina Borneo, President of the MCNAP. “Because this problem easily affects a huge number of people, I can say that kuto really is a social concern that needs to be addressed by the whole community.”

KKK visits Bagong Nayon I Elementary School

Last September 8, 2016, I joined in fellow moms at the Kilusang Kontra Kuto activity at Bagong Nayon 1 Elementary School in Antipolo. Licealiz Team had set up hair washing stations, where they shampoo three gradeschoolers at a time with Licealiz. Each were given a towel to dry their hair and a fine-toothed comb to get rid of the dead lice and nits to prevent further infestation.

On stage, we joined in parents as KKK Activations ambassador Dr. Maria Michelle Vita debunked lice myths and lectured on how lice spread and how to treat the lice infestation correctly.

Dr. Vita  travels with the Licealiz team and gives lectures to parents of public school students about head lice prevention and treatment.

“We formed the Kilusang Kontra Kuto to help stop the spread of misinformation about kuto and to remove the stigma associated with being infested. Kuto is a public health problem that can be solved with the help of everyone from the community.” explained Dr. Vita.

There’s a lot of misinformation about lice and  #KilusangKontraKuto has  been formed to set the record straight when it comes to head lice diagnosis, treatment and prevention.

This September, Licealiz will continue arranging shampooing programs and activities for public school students all over the country and will also be posting educational materials on head lice and how to fight them in its Facebook page.

Do join in the #KilusangKontraKuto in changing the public’s perception about lice infestation and in disseminating correct information on head lice prevention and treatment.

IEF SUCCESS: Ignite – Empower – Fluorish

When I was younger, I define success as achieving fame, wealth and power. Now that I'm a little wiser, I realize that success is subjective. There is no all-inclusive meaning of success. It is relative to what one sets as goals and not a "one size fits all" definition.

Whine success maybe achieving financial freedom for some, it maybe as simple as celebrating small victories and good health to others. Success may come easy for those born to wealthy parents. On the other hand, it may evolved through years of hard work, learning and practice. The road to success for most people looks uncertain replete with unexpected surprises.

Kristine Marcelo, CEO of IEF Inc. shared that  there are certain circumstances that sometimes hinder your road to success. As the organizer of the upcoming symposium dubbed as “Success: Ignite – Empower – Fluorish”,  IEF will help participants gain success and be  better versions of themselves.

IEF is on a mission to empower more people as they present presents IEF SUCCESS: Ignite – Empower – Fluorish on October 18, 2016 (2-4PM) at the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Theater located at De Jesus Avenue inside Camp General Emilio Aguinaldo, Quezon City.
The said symposium features Francis Kong, Eric Cruz and Ace Gapuz. Part of proceeds will be for the benefit of World Vision.

Kristine and other guests speakers will share how they overcame obstacles in reaching their individual goals in spite of the many things that stood their way. Francis Kong (The Outstanding Filipino TOFIL award winner 2014)  and these remarkable people have gone through success issues and found the key to ignite inner strength that enabled them to succeed in life and career.

Be inspired and learn the secrets to success by attending the Francis King speaking engagement.  IEF will help you stay focused on your personal goals and keep things in perspective.

Merck leads “Unmasking Your Thyroid" Awareness Campaign

Thyroid problems affect millions of Filipinos yet over half are presumed to be unaware of their thyroid dysfunction as symptoms of thyroid disorders are often mistaken for other diseases. Thyroid symptoms are sometimes hard to catch, and so these are often ignored by patients.

According to a study by the Philippine Society of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism in 2012, one in 11 Filipino adults has goiter, and around one in 12 Filipino adults suffers from some form of thyroid disorders.

The thyroid gland is a major regulating player in the body's metabolism. It plays an important role as the master control center for every cell's metabolic functions. Because there's such a wide range of problems, thyroid conditions are tricky to diagnose. Thyroid disorders often progress for a long time with no treatment in some cases. Hence, it is important to have one’s thyroid checked as early as possible. Merck Inc. held a bloggers event last September 21, 2016 at the Holiday Inn Makati to raise awareness on thyroid disorder.

Dr. Nemencio Nicodemus, Jr., President of the Philippine Society of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism, gave an informative talk on what the thyroid is, as well as the symptoms of thyroid disease. He discussed the importance of early detection plus symptoms and facts about the Thyroid Disease including nodules, goiter and thyroid cancer. Dr. Nicodemus taught the audience how to do a simple self-exam to help find lumps or enlargements that may point to thyroid conditions.

Patients with hypothyroidism, or too little thyroid hormone, tend to have slower metabolism. They gain weight despite not eating much, move and speak slowly, feel tired and have depressed thoughts, cannot tolerate cold, and have irregular menstrual periods. In extreme hypothyroidism, the life threatening Myxedema occurs. Myxedema slows the metabolism to a point where you would fall into a coma.

On the other hand, patients with hyperthyroidism, or too much thyroid hormone, will have hyperactive metabolism. Symptoms closely aligned with hyperthyroidism are weight loss, rapid heartbeat, weakness, anxiety, trouble sleeping, have sweating and heat intolerance, and can have tremors in their hands. Hyperthyroidism causes the body to run on overdrive all the time. Hyperthyroidism, when left untreated can lead to serious heart complications like Arrhythmia, (abnormal heart beat), congestive heart failure (Cardiac Arrest) and Hypertension. Dr. Nicodemus stressed that proper information and early detection will always be better than cure that comes too late.

More information can be found online in the website www.thyroid.ph. This is an online repository of information where people can learn more about thyroid disorders. The website also contains useful guides which can help people check themselves for symptoms of thyroid disorders, such as goiter, hyperthyroidism, or hypothyroidism.

The Core of Pillars 5

Younger people are getting sick with degenerative diseases and it is increasingly becoming common among them to suffer because they are following an unhealthy lifestyle—they do not have the right nutrients that their bodies need from a proper diet and they lack exercise to keep their bodies in top shape.

Responding to this unpleasant trend among people young and old alike, Pillars 5, Inc. aims to foster health and wellness by bringing in all-natural food supplements that help the body to rebuild its immune system and restore it back to optimal health.

Through Pillars 5’s network of home-based entrepreneurs, the company’s passion for bringing back health to people has helped not only those in need to get back their lives from all the unhealthy practices, but also those people who have a dream of building their own businesses and achieve financial freedom. Pillars 5 is not shy to say that they are a multi-level marketing (MLM) company and it has been a big challenge for them to differentiate themselves from most MLM companies and also to expunge the negative preconceived notions on the industry.

“MLM is an industry with a negative image because of how many of the companies in it have been operating. People have compromised their values and so the industry, as a whole, has been compromised. You will find many people being scammed by companies with less than superior products and dubious business practices,” explains Pillars 5 President and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Ramon Garcia. The lack of regulations for the MLM industry does not help companies who do their best in building a better image for the industry, especially those with products that could really help people.

“On top of that, many people don’t have a good understanding of the MLM industry that they represent and are not able to communicate what their company has to offer. What we have set out to achieve is to build our business based on five core values: Servant Leadership, Humility, Excellence, Integrity, and Stewardship. Those core values are the uncompromising foundation of our business and, we believe, they will serve us very well now and in the future,” Mr. Garcia adds.

They pass on these core values to their home-based entrepreneurs— their distributors— by building a strong relationship and by educating them on how they can “add value” to their customer’s life. For Pillars 5, it is always the best to educate, train, and equip people so they will understand the business, do it the right way and make an honest living. Relationships drive everything else that happens after that and for Pillars 5, it’s about helping and supporting their distributors and their organizations to grow.

“We strive for consistency in what we say and do; staying focused on the company’s vision; staying true to our core values. Over time, this is how people will perceive us differently from the rest of the pack,” Mr. Garcia notes. “We differentiate ourselves from the rest by explaining how we do things differently, i.e., affordable entry into the business, product emphasis, no hard selling, no false claims and promises, no hype.”

When these relationships with their distributors have been solidified and imbibed with the company’s core values, it is almost always easy for the distributors to market their products sourced locally and internationally.

The Pillars 5 business is well-founded on products that are made from all-natural ingredients that can give people peace of mind on their usage of them. Unlike synthetic food supplements in the market, Pillars 5 food supplements come from whole foods. Because they are whole-foods based, the activity of the nutrients in their ingredients are kept intact to complement the natural mechanisms of the human body so that the cells in the body can be able to use these nutrients readily.

Headlining their product line-up is Life Enzyme, a multi-nutrient supplement. It is sourced from 150 fruits, vegetables, and herbs that have been fermented for 365 days. This process magnifies the nutrients in these ingredients and through the beauty of biotechnology, makes them bio-available to the body. It is produced in Taiwan by their partner, Enzyme Village.

Nutrishuz Green Foods Health Drink and My TLC Essential Oilsare formulated by their biochemistry expert consultant and produced in the Philippines. Nutrishuz is a delicious veggie drink ideal for people strengthening the immune system. Because of the great taste, even kids are raving about it. My TLC, on the other hand, is an aromatherapy product. A great home remedy for common ailments, it is a special blend of essential oils applied topically or inhaled, and is a must to carry in one’s bag or pocket. It is powerful because it already makes use of the very essence of a plant in addressing health issues.

The Souq Moroccan Argan Oil is sourced from Morocco. It comes purely from the Argan nut and underwent pressing from organically certified operations. It is a beauty product that rejuvenates the skin, hair, and nails.

Their customers give all positive feedbacks but Mr. Garcia constantly reminds that their products are not cures or treatments for illnesses, but emphasized what Pillars 5 products do very well, “to rebuild and restore. “ We help rebuild the immune system so that the immune system will restore the person back to optimal health. Our body is the intelligent healer, not the products. What our products do is give the body what it needs to heal and repair itself.”

Pillars 5 is a company that provides an opportunity not only for those who would want to regain their optimal health back, but also for those who would want to build on their dreams. The road will definitely not be easy for them, as they face many challenges in building each other’s dreams while at the same time helping change an unhealthy world. But challenges can be met and inspiration from them ripples to others, motivating them to push on. “We are in the throes of a health revolution and we want to lead it,” Mr. Garcia says.

Sign in the Thresher Shark Conservation Petitiion and Make a Difference

Malapascua Island tourist industry is known for its majestic diving tourist attraction. Philippines  is one of the top 5 countries with high shark diversity found in Donsol, Sorsogon; Manta Bowl in Ticao Pass; Cagayan de Oro and Malapascua Island, Cebu.

Cagayan de Oro has the highest concentration of megamouth shark strandings, Three kinds of sharks can be found in our waters.  These are: big eye thresher, pelagic thresher and common thresher.

Philippines is the only country that  has an established pelagic thresher shark dive industry. Sharks grow slowly, and have a small number of young per brood. With the high demand for shark fins that end up in the restaurants, not to mention shark products in pharmacies and other industries, sharks become vulnerable to overfishing.

This is the reason why my family and I refrain from patronizing sharksfin soup, shark oil, leather, jewellery and other shark byproducts. With dimishing demand on these products, we may be able to help conserve these species.

Sharks are at the top of the ocean ecosystem and so removing them may cause the whole structure to collapse.  A food chain minus its apex predators would mean the end for some lower species.  Shark depletion will result  in the loss of  important fish and shellfish species down the food chain.

Big fishing companies have lots of money to coerce decision makers into passing legislations  generally against the best interests of shark populations.  the only way to go head to head with these companies is by raising awareness. The conservation of these species lie in our hands.  But how can we protect these sharks?

Signing a petition is something you and others can do to jointly achieve this.  These small actions are significant in shark conservation.  Make a difference by signing A PETITION to include Malapascua’s thresher sharks on the world’s endangered species list!

Let all Filipinos unite to push for the protection of the thresher sharks!  The Philippines’ YES vote is important for thresher shark conservation.   This  platform will help to promote one of the world’s most sought-after dive experiences and secure our future generation's  opportunity to see the pelagic thresher sharks in Monad Shoal.

We can make all these happen by signing in the Petition and Voting YES for Threshers at Change.org!

Do join in the Thresher Shark Campaign and stand up for Shark Protection!
