This PhilCare Wellness Box reminds me to slow down and take charge of my holistic health

When a person takes care of himself, his health improves and so is his ability to be productive in all phases of his life. The overall sense of wellness allows for a happier environment and decreases the need for the traditional healthcare system.

To get first dibs on the Filipinos’ sense of well-being, one of the pioneers in the Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) industry in the Philippines, Philcare, recently conducted a wellness index covered the physical, nutritional, medical, lifestyle, psychological dimensions, vice, and sex. This ground-breaking study revealed that Filipinos generally feel good about their health. The bad news is that Filipinos’ have the tendency to be in denial and are only mindful about their well-being when sickness sets in.

And when they fall sick, most do not consult the physician. Instead, Filipinos consult a neighbor who readily spares some tablets left over from his previous illness to treat self-recognized symptoms. While nothing untoward happens on following such advice in most of the times, self-medication can be dangerous. Potential hazards include poisonings, adverse reactions and delays in proper treatment of the disease due to incorrect self-diagnosis.

The PhilCare Wellness Index also showed that 44 percent of 1,200 respondents from Metro Manila and key cities in Luzon,  Visayas and Mindanao  believed that they know what comprises a balance diet. In fact, 70 percent said they eat breakfast regularly, while about 60 percent eat fruits and vegetables daily. However, about 27 percent of them regularly eat fried or fatty food, 21 percent love eating sugar-rich foods and drinks, and 15 percent eat processed and junk food daily. They missed the fact that sugar and fat is as dangerous as alcohol and tobacco as warned by health experts. Overeating sweets increases one's risks for diabetes and heart disease. The sugary foods systematically destroys without symptoms until it is too late.

There seemed to be a lack of prevention against diseases. Most Filipinos are unaware of the importance of preventive health care and how inextricably linked it is to overall health. The study reflected that a majority of Filipinos maybe hurting their health in several ways by drinking alcohol regularly and taking in nicotine. About 58 percent said they drink alcoholic beverages. They consume about six bottles or glasses of alcohol per week. About 49 percent also smoke cigarettes and, on average, they consume 10 sticks daily.

While an overwhelming majority of Filipinos (more than 85 percent) enjoy a good work-life balance, 41.1 percent of them admit experiencing stress slightly. Many Filipinos resort to binge drinking after office work to handle stress according to the PhilCare Wellness Index. Binge drinking and continued alcohol use in large amounts takes a toll on the liver. It is associated with many health problems including liver disease and nerve damage.

Stress management has to be anchored on wellness. Bring your world to stand still for a moment each day to reduce stress levels. A highly stressful life can be alleviated by improving one's physical health and wellness. Stress should not be used as an excuse to damage the body.

This wellness index serves as the eye-opener on how Filipinos perceive what is healthy and how they are actually pursuing health.

PhilCare believes that while physical fitness and good nutrition are definitely pillars of wellness, they cannot complete the wellness picture without the emotional and mental aspects.
