Filipino Entrepreneurs are confident based on 1st PH startup survey results

Filipino startups are confident and optimistic, with plans ranging from conducting initial public offering (IPO) to tapping new markets within and outside the Philippines. To achieve their goals, they want to make their businesses sustainable through improved tax incentives, greater ease in doing business, and better access to capital.

These sum up the findings of the 2017 Philippine Startup Survey, which will be unveiled during Slingshot ASEAN:Startup and Innovation Summit on 20 October 2017 at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Manila. The survey was conducted by Isla Lipana & Co./PwC Philippines (PwC), the Knowledge Partner for the summit, in partnership with QBO Philippines, the country’s first public-private initiative for startups formed in 2016.

PwC Philippines’ Deals and Corporate Finance Managing Partner Jade Roxas-Divinagracia, explains: “Respondents were asked about their experiences, insights, motivations, plans, and needs. The report also gives a snapshot of the beginnings and the current status of the Philippine startup ecosystem.”

“Through insights gleaned from this report, we hope that the government and private sector can continue to collaborate to support entrepreneurs in turning their ideas into reality,” says Rene “Butch” Meily, President of QBO Philippines and of IdeaSpace Foundation, Inc.

IdeaSpace Foundation, Inc. is one of the founders of QBO Philippines. Its Executive Director, Diane Eustaquio, notes: “The journey though is not going to get any easier as the landscape is VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous). Let us continue to work on paving the way for Philippine-based technopreneurs and their innovations so that they can prove their impact on creating greater business value and a brighter future.”

Atty. Alexander Cabrera, PwC Philippines’ Chairman and Senior Partner, has nothing but respect for the 106 CEOs and founders who participated in the survey. “I hope that the stories will inspire other startups, investors, corporates, and the government to work together, and build great companies. There is a huge multiplier effect to empowering aspiring entrepreneurs.”

Survey highlights:
• 35% of the respondents launched their startups in 2016, and 19% launched in 2017.
• 43% are in the pre-revenue phase, while 37% have annual revenues below PHP2m.
• When they were starting their businesses, the top challenges they faced were capital requirements (88%), regulatory requirements (54%), and general economic/business conditions (50%).
• 63% are planning to raise equity financing to finance their growth.
• 47% are planning to raise less than US$1m in the next three to five years, while 27% are planning to raise between US$1m and US$3m. • 94% are planning to welcome an investor in the next three years.
• Primary uses of funds in the next three to five years are product development (39%) and marketing initiatives (29%).
• Strategies for growth in the next three to five years are to improve existing products or services (84%), introduce new products or services (79%), and enter new territories outside the Philippines (61%).
• 63% are planning to conduct an IPO in the next five to seven years.
• 95% are planning to enter new territories in the next five years.
• New markets to tap are other areas in the Philippines (56%), Indonesia (59%), Thailand (57%), Malaysia (55%), and Vietnam (52%).
• To help startups build sustainable businesses, the top focus areas for improvement are tax incentives for startups (59%), ease of doing business (59%), and access to capital (55%).

QBO Philippines co-founder, the Department of Science and Technology, expresses its desire for the startup community to thrive. DOST Secretary Fortunato De La Peña says, “May everyone realize and appreciate the entrepreneurial environment that has been set up especially for those whose agenda includes not only having a robust source of livelihood but also contributing to the country’s development on the overall.”

For his part, Secretary Ramon Lopez of the Department of Trade and Industry, another QBO Philippines co-founder, shares the same sentiment: “We are confident that with the demonstrated capacity of the Filipino in terms of creativity, talent, and hard work to be innovative and entrepreneurial, plus the continued partnership among stakeholders, we can build an inclusive innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem that can help in the development of MSMEs.”

Bancrea Homes launches its website

Looking for a home should be exciting and fun.  And Bancrea Homes will be able to get you the best deal  to own a great space minus the hassles.

Bancrea Homes has a lot of properties in their listing for you to choose from. Backed with years of experience in helping people make the right decision, they can help you get the perfect space.

The real estate digital services provider Bancrea Homes launched  their new website as prelude to its optimism in  generating P1 billion sales before the end of the year.  The website launch was  part of their initiative to address gaps in real property sales.6

“We have created BacreaHomes.com because some sellers, when they’re done with selling the property, they no longer assist their buyers. With this application, we assist our clients from reservation to documentation, from the payments to moving in,” he said.

The website features a 24/7 live chat hosted by a real-person customer service staff, an “E-Refer Kita” app where an individual can refer a sales lead, check the status of their referral and earn a commission on the lead.

Roy Buen, founder and chief executive officer of Bancrea Homes, said that www.BancreaHomes.com will expand their reach and boost sales.

“I am very optimistic because there’s a lot of mass-housing backlog in the country, around five million homes. So with our program, such as Pabahay Program, where we collaborate with the employees without cash-outs, only documents, then they are ready to move in,” he said following website launch in Manila.

With property developer 8990 Holdings Inc. as its partner, Bancrea Homes has collaborated with various employers to allow their employees to acquire their own homes.

Bancrea Homes works closely with government financial institutions such as Pag-Ibig Fund and the National Home Mortgage Financing Corporation to ensure that their clients' hard-earned money invested in real estate property will indeed pay off.

Moreover, Bancrea Homes also looking at partnering with other industries, such as furniture and home improvement contractors, architects, interior designers, and non-life insurance agencies to get the best deal for their clientelle.

It is for all these reasons why there is a need for property buyers to deal only with licensed real estate brokers such as Bancrea Homes.  The reality of how a deal can dry up in an instant, and not always for the best of reasons can be kept at bay.  You don't want  a sizeable investment to go kaput because of a broker's unethical activities.

Buyers have to be smart and not be swayed by sales talk. Buyers should be aware that their brokers are operating legally or else, they will just end up with nothing.

Microsoft introduces its productivity app called Kaizala

For many Philippine businesses, managing staff in the field presents several unique challenges. From having to capture operational data from remote staff to ensuring that things are running as they should, current management and communication tools can be slow and cumbersome to use. More importantly, not everyone in the field has access to a PC and even those who do could only respond when they were logged into the system. For these organizations, a convenient, secure, and mobile tool for a remote work management environment is required.

The challenges for task-based workers

There are hundreds of thousands of front-line workers in the Philippines working in banks, services, manufacturing plants, department stores, and other industries. Their insights in their first-hand dealings with the customers are important to the company but they typically don’t have a dedicated work space or computer. Department store staff, bank tellers and promodisers generally use pen and paper or their personal phones for work-related communications.

This makes it more difficult to communicate with their managers or report to the headquarters regarding task-related concerns. Consumer messaging apps offer a band-aid solution but often lack security and control while creating a custom app can get expensive. For management, assigning and tracking tasks is cumbersome, and aggregating data analytics can be time consuming.

But Microsoft Kaizala makes this all easier.

Introducing Microsoft Kaizala — a mobile app and service for communicating and coordinating work in large, distributed groups. Now available in the Philippines, Kaizala makes it easy to connect with large groups of people inside and outside your organization. These can include employees, customers, and suppliers. It enables organizations to manage work with their extended teams through a single, unified platform — all on their mobile phone.

Security Organizations can trust

Security remains a top priority for most organizations, and Microsoft Kaizala provides the controlled access and data security that they need. Azure Active Directory services authentication ensures secure access to the Kaizala Management Portal, where IT administrators can control membership of all groups, remove users in one instance, and control user access to sensitive data. Microsoft Kaizala maintains user privacy and stores data in Azure datacenters that adhere to industry standards for security and compliance.

Connect with your entire value chain

Many front-line workers don’t have their own company email address or access to internal tools, which makes it hard for managers to share and collect important information. Microsoft Kaizala enables managers to easily reach very large numbers of users within and outside their organization, using a simple and intuitive chat interface. Organizations can broadcast information – such as announcements, photos, videos, or documents, collect data from the field through polls or surveys, and see real-time analytics as results come in. Users can be quickly onboarded by using just their phone number as a unique ID.

“Most businesses work with several partners, distributors, and stakeholders who are not on the company’s email address list, so communication can be slow and unsecure. With Microsoft Kaizala, they can better connect and coordinate with the entire team. As internet usage increases, we believe it will be easier for organizations to communicate with all their stakeholders, wherever they are in the Philippines,” said Bertrand Launay, Microsoft Philippines Managing Director.

Collaborate and manage work efficiently

Microsoft Kaizala makes it easy to coordinate work with a company’s entire value chain – field employees, vendors, partners – with a simple work assignment workflow and real-time status tracking—right within the app. Companies can assign and track frequently-used tasks with built-in actions for common work scenarios, such as assigning jobs and tracking completion status, sharing and requesting location, submitting bills, and tracking expenses.

Microsoft Kaizala makes it simple for organizations to seamlessly communicate, collaborate and complete tasks, bringing together desktop users and mobile-only users who may be within or outside their organizations.

“Using Microsoft Kaizala, organizations can connect with their employees and the extended value chain. The product offers a simple and familiar chat interface and goes beyond to make everyone more productive using Surveys, Polls, Jobs, Meetings and other actions, right in your chats. As we launch Microsoft Kaizala in the Philippines, we hope to help connect the unconnected parts of organizations – whether they are in large and small enterprises or in the Government. Microsoft Kaizala’s vision is to empower every organization and community to achieve more through purposeful chat”, Rajiv Kumar, Corporate Vice President, Office Product Group, Microsoft

Get more with Kaizala Pro

Microsoft Philippines also announced the launch of its enterprise version, Microsoft Kaizala Pro that allows organizations to have full administrative control of their groups.

Microsoft Kaizala Pro has additional features that include user and group management, system integration and automation using Microsoft Kaizala APIs, advanced reporting and analytics, ability to publish custom actions, ability to create public groups, and organizational profile and directory. “For management, the reviewing process becomes a lot easier online. What used to take 7-10 days to compile is now happening on a real-time basis. They are able to get information in real-time, and can also give feedback to the team in the field an in turn, can increase productivity or allow them to give better solutions to their customers,” added Launay.

South Pub Alabang

If you are itching to wind up the week and destress in a  bar in the South, then go check out this place in CommerCenter. South Pub Alabang is a hip, new bar for a relaxing night out with friends and family. Commerce Center, Alabang!

The owners of South Pub Alabang decided to put up a bar in the Metro South with the pub people in mind. This trendy hangout place takes on British, Spanish and Filipino food fusion which were curated to  perfectly complement  liquors, cocktails, local and draft beers. Each dish were carefully crafted for alcohol pairings.

For appetizers, we had Nachos and deep-fried, Crunchy Mushrooms.  Both has that crunch and texture to really perk up one's appetite.

Corned Crispy Pata is South Pub Alabang's take on this favorite pork dish of mine. They cure the meat in brine for at least 3 days and the result is  a cross between Chicharon and Corned Beef when deep fried.  The pork skin are all crispy while its meat remains fork-tender under its crunchy skin. I love it for its crunchy goodness.

I like this paired with their hefty serving of Sisig Rice.

The Chipirones (P 220) is another Spanish dish that you should try.  It is made of well-seasoned baby squid spread on  top of a sunny side egg with two pieces of toasted bread. This is really a simple but comforting dish.

South Pub Burger is one that you shouldn't miss out on.  Their two-patty beef burger is heavy and loaded with cheese. It is served with french fries.

Picky eaters would love to sink in their teeth into the Salmon Dish, It is served straight up on a bed of sticky rice.

South Pub Alabang  is designed to impress. They have soft, cushioned chairs for  intimate dining.

They mix up some recreational beverages at the indoor bar to help you unwind from a long day at the office and enjoy the company with friends.  So head on over and enjoy a cold glass of beer.

A taste of modern Japanese food at Mr. Roboto

Mr. Roboto is a retro-themed restaurant that opened last June 2017 at Alabang  Town Center. Corporate Center.   Owner Dani Ramos studied  abroad at the famous Le Cordon Bleu, and is related to the folks behind Neil’s Kitchen.  She   and her partner, David Mendoza manage  Mr. Roboto, which serves  Japanese dishes with a modern twist.

The place is a haven for the 80's kids as robot-themed restaurant had its walls decorated with anime graphics like Voltes V, Voltron, Daimos, Mazinger Z and much more that do make entertaining diversions! Even some of the nigiri, maki and sushi dishes were named after the robots!

Their Nori Nachos is a big serving of  nori chips, crispy-fried kani, fresh tuna bits, spicy salmon and sprinkled with cream cheese and wasabi mayo--a perfect appetizer for the delightful lunch that would follow shortly.   It is a clever starter full of modern flavors and textures!

They served us Ultimate Prawn Tempura and Chicken Kastu with Gravy for donburi.  The  Ultimate Prawn Tempura was love!  I liked its light and feathery batter!  The prawn meat was moist inside the
crispy, golden brown batter.

Chicken Katsu /Kaarage is crunchy breaded chicken with subltle curry sauce that is quite peppery on rice. It has  vegetables tempura on the side.

The huge servings can actually be shared by two people.

The Voltes V maki, Shake Nigiri, Maguro Nigiri, Mr. Roboto Maki, and the Daimos were so flavorful! The Voltes V maki has deep fried, golden brown prawn on top and with crunchy bits of tenkasu. Don't miss out on the Shake Nigiri, my personal favorite!

The pink rice of the Shake Nigiri (P 225) immediately caught my eye!  It gets its pink color from the  beets sauce, and is infused with soy truffle and topped with fresh, negi salmon.  The flavors were a balanced mixture of sweetness, and saltiness.

The  Chocolate Bread Pudding (P 295) was served to end our meal. It's  a plateful  of cubed, soft bread pudding with milo powder and Nutella cream plus a topping of  vanilla ice cream. The bread pudding is so rich, moist, and addicting. The candied bacon bits on top of the ice cream gives it that wow-factor. This chocolatey pudding is definitely recommended for sharing.

Visit Mr. Roboto and get to meet the millennials behind it. Mr. Roboto definitely gives you value for your money.   And do take advantage of its current promotion--
They are offering  our VOLTES V maki at 40% off  up to October 15 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of  VOLTES V!
